First off, a big thanks to all of the readers/visitors who were at Photoshop World last week and came up and introduced themselves. I had a great time there and it was so cool to get to meet some of the people that visit/post here. Now, on to the presets…

A couple weeks ago, I posted a video on the beta Camera Profiles that Adobe has released over at the Adobe Labs website. At the end of the video I mentioned creating Develop presets for those profiles you like the most, so I decided to do just that for myself. Then I figured I might as well share them this week so you don’t have to do the work. The really neat part about using presets for these profiles is that you don’t have to select them in the Camera Calibration tab to see what they look like. Instead, just hover over the preset name in the Presets panel and the Navigator will show you a preview so you can quickly see what each looks like. I’ve created presets for all of the Nikon and Canon profiles (separate downloads below). The one prerequisite is that you’ll need to have the camera profiles installed in order to use them so make sure you go back and watch the video to see how.

READ THIS FIRST: These presets only work if you’ve installed the profiles first. They are not the profiles themselves, but presets to apply the profiles. Also, since the profiles only work with Raw or DNG files, the same holds true with the presets.

• Click here to the video about the new camera profiles.
• Click here to download the Nikon Camera Profile presets.
• Click here to download the Canon Camera Profile presets.
• Click here to see a video on how to install presets.

Smashing Magazine’s 2nd Anniversary

It happened again. Today, Smashing Magazine celebrates its second birthday. We are two years old now and we are proud of what we have achieved over these years. To celebrate our anniversary, we could do any number of things. For instance, we could organize a huge giveaway—as we did one year ago—but, of course, bigger and more overwhelming. However, we won't do that; after all, we're giving away stuff every week and we have many contests where our readers can win truly smashing prizes. (New contests are already on their way.) Posters Instead, we could share some insight about the highlights of Smashing Magazine over the last 12 months: an exploding number of page views, hundreds of thousands of backlinks, numerous testimonials and rewarding ad revenues. But we would probably sound like show-offs and we can't afford to do that; after all, we have only published 301 posts so far.

But we would probably sound like show-offs and we can’t afford to do that; after all, we have only published 301 posts so far.

Another possibility would be to discuss our plans for the future. What’s happening behind the scenes? What’s in the works? We could even share some top-secret information about the planned Smashing Book Series or new Smashing Forum. However, we won’t do that, because nobody can predict how successful those will really be.

Hence, the only remaining thing for us—Vitaly, Sven, the writers and other creative, hard-working minds of the Smashing Magazine team—to do is express our sincere gratitude to each of our readers for an absolutely smashing year. Without you—each and every one of you—our small magazine could not exist and definitely could not become what it has become today.

Comment and Win an Exclusive Poster!

Still, we do have a small surprise for you: a handful of exclusive Smashing Magazine posters, designed by the well-known, talented artist James White. You can preview the poster here or read the Making Of.

We are giving away 8 exclusive printed Smashing Anniversary posters, shining like gold in A3 format. Only 11 posters have been printed worldwide. If you want to win one of them, just write some kind words and congratulations in a comment to this post.

The winners will be determined randomly among all valid comments (spam and ad links do not count). Don’t forget to provide a valid email address in the input field, otherwise we won’t be able to notify you.

Design Showcase Of Creative Online-Shops

Times when online-shops were boring and unattractive are over. To attract customers' attention designers tend to design online-shops according to the atmosphere it has to create. An online-store in which retro-products are offered is designed in a retro-look. And shops which are aiming to attract young customers are designed in vibrant colors and modern style. Furthermore, interactive browsing through the store, implemented with Flash and JavaScript, gains on popularity as well.

This post showcases 45 examples of creative and unusual designs of online-stores. Being creative doesn't necessarily mean that the designs are successful since unconventional approaches often increase the time users need to climb the learning curve and figure out how they can achieve their goals. Still, how can you present your products in a distinctive way and how to design a truly unique online-store? Let's find out.

Please notice: we don't know if creative design approaches result in better sales. This post is supposed to provide you with some interesting ideas and approaches which you can use in your future projects, not with recommendations for the most effective online-store-designs.

Trendy design elements such as wood background, textures, handwriting, collage and grunge are quite popular. Reflections, shadows and similar elements from the times of vivid Web 2.0 are used rarely; however, designers of t-shirt- and children’s cloth-stores seem to have a different opinion on that matter for some reason. Although Flash is used, the navigation is extremely easy and simple. Apparently, music in the background is supposed to create a good mood.

Etsy
Among dozes of distinctive features Etsy has an appealing navigation menu with icons and vibrant illustrations. The creative approach of the design is hidden in its functionality.
